Transforming Overgrown Landscape Beds with Professional Planting Design in Shelton, CT
This planting design and landscape bed renovation project in Shelton, CT transformed dated, overgrown landscape beds into a clean, vibrant, and low-maintenance landscape. By combining shrub removal, expert pruning, fresh plantings, premium mulch, and decorative stone accents, our team created a landscape that offers year-round beauty while improving the health and structure of the existing planting beds.
Step 1: Shrub Removal & Landscape Bed Preparation
Our project began by removing several unwanted shrubs, including a large juniper at the front of the landscape beds that had become overgrown and overwhelmed the surrounding plantings. Once the unwanted vegetation was removed, our crew thoroughly hand-weeded each bed and created crisp, defined edges to restore a clean, professional appearance and prepare the landscape for its transformation.
Step 2: Shrub Pruning & Root Fertilization
To improve the health and appearance of the remaining landscape, we carefully pruned the existing shrubs by removing dead, damaged, and overgrown branches while shaping each plant for healthy future growth. We also applied a professional root plant fertilizer to encourage stronger root development, improve nutrient absorption, and help both existing and newly installed plants establish quickly.
Step 3: New Planting Design & Installation
Landscape designer and sales consultant, John, created a planting design that provided a balanced combination of evergreen structure, seasonal color, and long-term curb appeal. Each plant was selected for its mature size, growing conditions, and complementary textures to create an attractive landscape throughout every season.
New plantings included:
-
3 'Cat's Pajamas' Nepeta
-
3 'Cavatine' Pieris Japonica
-
1 'Summer Crush' Endless Summer Hydrangea
-
3 'Soft Serve Gold' Chamaecyparis
Together, these carefully selected plants provide colorful blooms, evergreen interest, attractive foliage, and a layered landscape design that will continue to mature beautifully over time.
Step 4: Mulch & Decorative Stone Installation
To complete the project, we installed a fresh layer of premium dark brown mulch throughout the landscape beds to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide a rich, finished appearance. We also installed 3/4-inch decorative stone along the ends of the planting beds, creating clean transitions, improving drainage, and adding an elegant finishing touch that complements the overall landscape design.
