A Fresh Start: Planting & Landscape Design in Stratford, CT

Transforming Overgrown Planting Beds with a Fresh, Colorful Landscape Design
Sometimes a landscape doesn't need a few new plants—it needs a fresh start. That was the case with this Stratford, CT property, where several planting beds had become heavily overgrown and were no longer adding much to the overall look of the home.
Our team started by clearing out the unwanted growth and preparing the existing beds for a completely new planting design. Rather than removing everything, we worked around established plants worth keeping, including the beautiful mature Japanese maple, and designed the new landscape to complement what was already there.
A Fresh Landscape Design with Color, Texture & Variety
Once the beds were cleared and prepared, we installed a mix of flowering shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses to bring different heights, textures and colors throughout the property.
The new plantings included Little Lime Tree Hydrangea, Endless Summer Hydrangeas, Tiny Tuff Stuff Hydrangeas, Double Knock Out Roses, My Monet Weigela, Blue Jean Baby Russian Sage, Cat's Pajamas Nepeta, Arizona Sun Gaillardia, Butterfly Blue Scabiosa and LittleBun Fountain Grass.
We also incorporated Straight & Narrow Japanese Holly for upright evergreen structure and Doctor Ruppel Clematis to add another flowering element to the landscape.
Rather than filling every available space immediately, the new design gives the plants room to establish and grow into the beds. As the shrubs, grasses and perennials mature, the landscape will continue to fill in while maintaining the cleaner, more intentional look we were trying to achieve.
Reworking the Existing Planting Beds
A big part of this Stratford landscaping project happened before the first new plant went into the ground.
Our crew grubbed and cleared the existing beds, removed unwanted and overgrown vegetation, and prepared the soil for the new installation. Several areas that had become crowded and difficult to maintain were opened back up, including the beds along the house, around the mailbox and along the property's fencing.
One of the features we wanted to preserve was the large, mature Japanese maple. Instead of competing with tall weeds and overgrowth, the tree is once again the focal point of that area. We cleaned and redefined the surrounding bed and added new plantings that complement the maple without taking attention away from it.
Finishing the New Landscape
Each new planting received Plant Root Fertilizer at installation to help support establishment. Once all of the plants were in place, we finished the beds with premium pine hemlock mulch.
The fresh mulch gives the entire property a consistent, finished appearance while helping the soil retain moisture and reducing future weed growth. It also creates a clean backdrop that allows the different foliage, flowers and textures of the new plants to stand out.
The before-and-after difference on this property is dramatic, but the finished landscape still feels like it belongs with the home. Existing bed lines and mature landscape elements were incorporated into the new design, while the overgrown areas were replaced with a colorful mix of plants that will become even more impressive as they mature.
