Fall Lawn Renovation in Connecticut: Is Your Lawn Ready for a Transformation?

Fall lawn renovation connecticut

Fall is the perfect time to give your lawn the makeover it deserves. At Shannon Lawn and Landscaping, we specialize in lawn renovations in Connecticut, helping homeowners restore the lush, green, healthy lawns they’ve always wanted. But how do you know if your lawn actually needs a renovation?

Signs Your Lawn Needs Renovation

Your lawn might be crying out for help if you notice:

  • Bare patches that don't fill in, even with care
  • Dry, compacted soil that doesn’t bounce back after watering
  • A lawn overrun with weeds like crabgrass, nutsedge, or bentgrass
  • More weeds than actual grass
  • A weak lawn that just won’t thrive no matter how much you fertilize

If any of these sound familiar, your yard may benefit from a comprehensive lawn renovation, and we’re here to help.

What Is a Lawn Renovation?

A lawn renovation is a multi-step process designed to restore, repair, and rejuvenate your entire lawn from the ground up. Our expert team in Connecticut follows a tried-and-true method to get your grass healthy, green, and gorgeous again. Here's how we do it:

Step-by-Step Lawn Renovation Process

Step 1: Request a Free Drive-by Estimate

Submit a request through our website, and a member of our experienced sales team will stop by your property within the week. We’ll:

  • Evaluate the lawn’s current state
  • Take notes and photos
  • Create a customized estimate based on your lawn’s specific needs

This is a no-obligation consultation designed to give you clarity on what your lawn really needs.

Step 2: Herbicide Treatment

If your lawn is beyond saving, we may apply a full herbicide treatment to kill all grass and weeds—giving us a clean slate. In less severe cases, we can selectively target problem weeds. This step is crucial for long-term results and typically takes 24 hours to 1 week for full effectiveness.

Step 3: Dethatching

Our crew returns with a professional dethatcher to remove layers of dead grass, debris, and thatch. This allows nutrients and oxygen to reach the soil and encourages new grass growth. We haul away all the debris, leaving your lawn prepped and clean.

Step 4: Topdressing with Premium Soil

If your lawn has poor soil quality, we apply a ¼ inch layer of premium topsoil. This enhances the soil’s microbiome, supports seed germination, and improves long-term grass health.

Step 5: Core Aeration

Our aeration machines removes plugs of soil throughout your lawn to relieve soil compaction and increase access to water, air, and nutrients. This sets the stage for deep root development. (Pairing with a fertilization application is recommended but sold separately.)

Step 6: Slice Seeding

Unlike overseeding, which simply spreads seed on top, slice seeding uses a special machine to insert seeds directly into the soil. This ensures optimal seed-to-soil contact, resulting in stronger germination and a thicker lawn. This is the most effective seeding method for lawn renovations.

Step 7: Organic Starter Fertilizer

We apply a specially-formulated, organic starter fertilizer that’s safe for new seeds. It boosts early growth and gives your lawn the nutrients it needs to thrive during the critical first weeks.

Step 8: Hay Mulch Application

We finish by spreading a layer of weed-free straw to protect the new seeds from birds, rain, and sun exposure. This natural mulch helps retain moisture and keeps your new lawn safe while it establishes.

Bonus Step: Liming the Soil

In Connecticut, acidic soil is a common issue. We apply lime to adjust your soil’s pH to the ideal range of 6.0–6.5, supporting healthy grass and plant growth. This treatment takes time—up to 3 months—but makes a big difference in the long run. You may have to apply multiple applications to fully amend the soil. This is not typically a part of the lawn renovation, but can be added for those interested. To learn more, ask one of our sales representatives about our Lawn Care program.
